Réaux in Petite Champagne

Réaux is one of the communes in Petite Champagne, traditionally devoted to wine growing. During the time of the crusades, it was the parish of Estienne des Réaux.
It is placed under the protection of St Vincent, patron saint of winegrowers, and protector of their vines.

The commune, beside the river Trèfle, rises from the valley to the slopes of Laage. The white and gray, thin and meagre lands, although infertile, are rich by virtue of the outstanding quality they confer to the brandy made from them.

The local inhabitants, buffeted by the year-long winds, showed their mettle in learning how to use that energy source, taking inspiration from eastern windmills. They became winemakers and millers combined, and built hundreds of these mills.
Most mills have long since disappeared, but that of Laage still remains, surrounded by our vines, just as does the traditional welcome of miller and winegrower.
